Description:

Battles is a 4-week series focused on how the theme of Good and Evil seen throughout scripture also permeates pop culture. Good and evil, although often portrayed as black and white, include a lot of gray, and this series explores the areas of gray through different pop culture references. Viewed through the lens of the Mufasa story from the Lion King, participants will talk about how family relationships can be complicated. While Mufasa was in line to be King, we see arrogance, jealousy, and pride represented through characters in the movie. Topics also include athletics, specifically how we can celebrate others’ wins without vilifying them or being angry, as well as Minecraft, a popular game that uses blocks to create worlds. In the midst of creation, even in worlds we create ourselves, there are signs of good and evil built into the game on purpose, and the goal is working together. Finally, through the popular musical and movie WICKED, this study addresses what it looks like to stand up for what is right in the face of peer pressure and regardless of how it will be perceived.
