• The Future of the United Methodist Church
The Future of the United Methodist Church

The Thursday evening session from the 2018 Leadership Institute at Church of the Resurrection. Rev. Adam Hamilton and Bishop Robert Schnase, bishop of the Rio Grande, Texas Annual Conference, led an information session on “The Future of the United Methodist Church.” They spoke about the current conflict in the UMC over same-sex marriage, the differences in biblical interpretation related to this, and the bishop reviewed the proposal from the Council of Bishops on a way forward for the denomination. They then looked at data from polls taken of United Methodists, and they took a poll of the audience to see where the pastors and church leaders at Leadership Institute saw themselves, and where they saw their churches. This event was open to the public.

This resource contains the video recording of the complete session. In addition, you will also find the same recording divided into three separate segments, each focused on a specific aspect of the discussion. These are available for sharing with and educating church members and others interested in the future of The United Methodist Church.

Tool for Starting a New Pastorate

In starting a new pastoral assignment, United Methodist pastors typically meet with the group of people serving as the church's Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. Although one of the most important relationships, when it comes to the shared ministry of the pastor and his or her new congregation, these are often fraught with unspoken assumptions and expectations. This tool was designed to be used by pastors in that first introductory meeting to get aquainted with the new Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, clarify values and surface potential land mines.
